Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai (2024)
Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai (2024)

As a child, Kouzuki Mahiru loved to draw. Her drawing of a jellyfish even won a mural contest, and she participated in creating the mural. Pleased with the result, she showed it to her friends, but they mocked her work. From that moment on, Mahiru stopped drawing and tried to live in a way that made her seem like an average, normal girl.

A few years later, as she walked past the wall where her mural still remained. She noticed an idol who had covered almost the entire mural with her posters. Mahiru felt sad but couldn’t bring herself to say anything in protest. However, a mysterious girl stepped in and voiced her displeasure without hesitation. As they talked, it became clear that this girl was a huge fan of Mahiru’s drawings. She dreamed of Mahiru becoming the illustrator for her new project.

Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai (2024) – Audiovisual Design

Visuals

I have always admired Doga Kobo’s productions from a visual standpoint. In the past, they focused mainly on the fluidity and expressiveness of the animation. However, it’s worth noting that this didn’t come at the cost of character detail. That’s why I greatly appreciated their works for their visually pleasing attributes. Recently, I’ve noticed that their works are becoming even more detailed. Examples of this can be seen in their adaptation of Oshi no Ko or Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai.

They really put in a lot of effort to make the backgrounds impressive for the viewers. The overall composition was also consistent.

Audio

When I was browsing the Spring 2024 lineup, the first thing that caught my eye about this series was the stellar cast I would be encountering. Names like Takahashi Rie, Uesaka Sumire, Tomita Miyu, Itou Miku, Okasaki Miho, and Seto Asami speak for themselves. An absolutely star-studded cast. Considering that ‘Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai’ is an original title from Doga Kobo, it clearly signaled to me that the creators have high hopes and confidence in its success. Gathering so many phenomenal seiyuu in one anime is quite an achievement. So, it should come as no surprise when I say that all the actresses did a fantastic job. Takahashi Rie, in the role of the rebel Kano, was a pleasant surprise and once again showcased her incredible talent.

Unfortunately, the songs by JELLY didn’t particularly capture my heart.

Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai (2024) – Plot and Characters

Introduction

I usually take almost everything that comes from Doga Kobo without hesitation. In this case, I was even more encouraged by the fact that it is their original series. Additionally, they have cast a star-studded lineup of voice actresses.

A Quick Overview of Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai’s plot (2024)

Kouzuki Mahiru loved to draw since she was a child. Her drawing of a jellyfish even won a mural contest, in which she also participated in creating the mural. Proud of the result, she wanted to show her work to her friends. However, before she could say anything, they mocked her work. Since then, Mahiru abandoned drawing and started trying to live like an average, ordinary girl.

A few years later, as she was passing by the wall where her mural still remained. She noticed an idol who had covered almost the entire mural with her posters. She felt sad but couldn’t bring herself to protest. However, a mysterious girl stood up for her and expressed her displeasure without hesitation. It soon turned out that she was a huge fan of Mahiru’s drawings and dreamed of Mahiru becoming the illustrator for her new project.

This mysterious girl is Yamanouchi Kano, once a very popular idol. However, a scandal involving a serious quarrel with other idols in her unit excluded her from that world. Kano and Mahiru quickly found common ground and decided to collaborate on a project proudly named JELLY, in honor of Mahiru’s mural theme.

What is the series about

Kano and Mahiru quickly get to work, and the results are almost immediate. People simply want to listen to Kano’s music. Additionally, Mahiru’s character drawings give Kano a human face and significantly contribute to JELLY’s popularity. Mahiru soon realizes that her artistic skills need refinement, and her lack of basic drawing techniques severely limits her talent. She decides to enroll in a school for young artists.

Meanwhile, Kano encounters a former fan of hers named Mei—a quiet, musically gifted girl who, despite having a pleasant personality, has no friends. Seeing the transformation of her idol, Mei resents what Kano has done with her life and appearance. Nevertheless, she is thrilled to spend time with Kano and talk to her. Kano had given her a reason and motivation to live during a difficult time.

Characters

JELLY quickly expands its lineup. Mei begins to help with music and image aspects, motivated by the fact that she can collaborate with the idol who has always been her role model. The girls achieve success with each new song. They also receive significant assistance from Kiui, Mahiru’s childhood friend. Kiui offers her exceptional video editing skills and social media savvy, being a popular VTuber herself.

However, Kiui harbors a secret, so significant that she hasn’t even shared it with Mahiru, whom she hasn’t seen in person for a long time—since they finished school. The matter comes to light accidentally. The girls forming the JELLY project share a bond of friendship and a desire to help each other, so they take this matter seriously. In this way, Kiui finally receives the support and validation she has needed for a long time.

Other remarks

The storyline of Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai slightly suffered from the accelerated pacing in the last two episodes. In my opinion, it lacked at least one more episode to leisurely present the events at the very end of the story—events that were quite crucial for the development of the characters and their personalities. This doesn’t drastically affect the overall reception, but I believe it could have added more depth by showing in greater detail what the characters went through before the final performance. Unfortunately, this aspect was almost entirely omitted to fit within twelve episodes. It’s a shame because Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai could have been an even better series.

Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai (2024) – Evaluation and Summary

I’d be lying if I said Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai was a big surprise for me. Adaptations or original projects by Doga Kobo rarely fail to impress me. I would be surprised if this anime left a negative impression on me. It is not an absolute must-watch, but if someone enjoys musical series with a touch of drama and a strong emphasis on characterization, it is worth watching. The characters are easy to get attached to, the direction is of high quality, and the icing on the cake is the cast of voice actresses who provide a feast for the ears and brilliantly realize the creators’ vision.
