Konohana Kitan (2017)

In a village inhabited by youkai, over a dozen fox girls in human form work at a high-class hot spring ryoukan. This is where the rather clumsy Yuzu begins her new job. Having previously lived in the nearby mountains, she finds it quite difficult to adapt to her new lifestyle. Nevertheless, her personal charm and simplicity quickly help her befriend the rest of the inn’s staff.

Konohana Kitan (2017) – Audiovisual Design

Video

Konohana Kitan enchants the viewer from the very first scenes with its beautiful visual execution. The action takes place in a traditional Japanese ryoukan situated on the border between the human world and the realm of deities. This gives the artists a chance to shine—and indeed, every frame looks like a living painting. The backgrounds are incredibly polished, full of pastel colors and details nodding to classic Japanese aesthetics. The picturesque landscapes of the changing seasons—from the subtle pinks of blooming cherry blossoms in spring and the golden light of a summer festival, to the peaceful, snow-covered winter scenery—build a nostalgic mood and draw us into this magical world.

The animation is top-notch. Great care was taken to ensure fluid movements and excellent facial expressions. The heroines’ expressions are full of life. From Ren’s comical grimaces and the stern glares of the tsundere Satsuki, to Yuzu’s warm smile. All the emotions painted on the girls’ faces come across as convincing and adorable. You can clearly see that the creators put their hearts into the production.

Audio

The sound design subtly complements the visual feast. The soundtrack consists mainly of delicate, soothing melodies of traditional instruments that perfectly fit the iyashikei aesthetic. Admittedly, practically no musical motif is catchy enough to hum after the screening, but while watching, it creates an excellent background and never breaks immersion for even a moment.

A huge round of applause also goes to the voice cast. Each heroine sounds authentic and true to her character. Yuzu speaks with enthusiasm and warmth in her voice, capable of infecting the viewer with her optimism (Oono Yuuko). Satsuki, true to her perfectionist nature, enunciates her words in a composed and firm manner—but when she gets embarrassed, charming notes of uncertainty, typical for the dere hidden within a tsundere, can be heard in her tone (Hata Sawako). Ren flirts and dramatizes with her melodic voice like a true ojou-sama (Hoshina Risa). Even the sweet Sakura, though a girl of few words, delivers her lines quietly but with palpable playfulness (Kakuma Ai). Thanks to this, the Konohanatei cast truly resembles a group of close friends. You can hear that the actresses fully immersed themselves in their roles and perfectly captured the emotions that define each of the girls.

Konohana Kitan (2017) – Plot and Characters

Introduction

As a fan of peaceful slice of life anime, Konohana Kitan immediately caught my attention. The description suggesting a blend of slice of life with elements of Japanese folklore instantly interested me when I was choosing series to watch in the Fall 2017 season. I expected a warm, relaxing story with cute heroines, and that is exactly what I got, and then some. From the very first episode, the series spoils you with its idyllic, slightly mysterious atmosphere.

A Brief Overview of the Konohana Kitan (2017) Plot

The main protagonist is Yuzu—a cheerful fox girl (kitsune) raised in isolation by a kind-hearted nun. She leaves her home mountains to take up a job at the Konohanatei inn. It is a traditional Japanese hot spring inn that hosts deities (kami), youkai, and other supernatural beings. For Yuzu, who until now only knew a peaceful life alongside her guardian, the world of Konohanatei is a completely new experience. A challenge awaits her right on the threshold. She faces the strict boss Okami (a mysterious owner taking the form of an older fox lady) and is introduced to her coworkers.

The inn’s staff consists entirely of fox girls, each with a distinct personality. Tsurugino Satsuki—the oldest of them—is an ambitious perfectionist dreaming of becoming a miko. She is principled and aloof, and her cold demeanor and sharp tongue initially intimidate Yuzu. Natsume is a carefree, big-hearted tomboy who could easily pass for a handsome boy with her looks and behavior. Always energetic, she is always ready to defend her friends. Her childhood best friend, Ren, is the exact opposite. Elegant, delicate, and deeply caring about her appearance, she hides a rather obvious secret. She has a massive soft spot for Natsume and treats her as her personal knight, which leads to many amusing situations. The most mysterious of the crew is Sakura. Quiet and perpetually calm, she more often suddenly disappears somewhere than says anything, and her favorite toy is a terrifyingly sharp pair of scissors.

Every episode brings new challenges and lessons for our heroine. Under the watchful eye of the firm Satsuki, Yuzu learns the rules of etiquette and works hard to match the guest service standards. At the same time, her natural kindness and curiosity about the world help her quickly win the sympathy of the other girls and… the guests themselves, even the weirdest ones. And there is definitely no shortage of those at Konohanatei. From capricious spirits and minor deities, through talking dolls and creatures from legends, to the wandering souls of humans who have strayed here in search of solace.

What is the series about

Konohana Kitan is a slice of life with fantasy elements, which means we won’t find a fast-paced plot or massive drama here. Instead, we get a collection of loosely connected stories from the lives of the Konohanatei staff and their extraordinary guests. The episodes are episodic in nature. Each presents a separate story, often with a new character or event in the foreground. They are united by a common atmosphere and the background development of the heroines. The series deftly intertwines everyday life with mysticism. One moment we see the girls scrubbing floors or preparing meals, only to peek with them into the parallel world of deities and spirits a moment later.

Despite its lightness and ubiquitous charm, the anime can surprise with emotional depth. Many episodes carry a subtle message or a touching punchline. Yuzu learns the trade of a waitress from her older colleagues, but in reality, she learns that true omotenashi is more than just serving meals with a smile. It is about seeing the needs of another being—whether human, deity, or spirit—and offering them a moment of peace, understanding, and the warmth of home.

The series also gradually builds a delicate overarching plot that remains in the background, only to bloom in the finale. It concerns Yuzu’s destiny and the secrets behind the creation of Konohanatei. The final episode weaves together all the main motifs—the heroines’ attachment to the inn, their friendship, and the theme of granting others’ wishes. Without spoiling too many details, I will only say that the ending was truly magical and satisfying for me. The creators managed to surprise and move me at the same time, revealing that it was Yuzu’s kindness and altruism that were the spark that started it all. Because of this, the finale of Konohana Kitan gives the entire story a deeper meaning and leaves the viewer with warmth in their heart and the conviction that the good we give to others can come full circle and return to us in the least expected ways.

Characters

The driving force of Konohana Kitan is undoubtedly the colorful cast of characters and the relationships between them. The heroines fit into archetypes familiar to anime fans, which only makes them even more endearing.

Yuzu

The heart of the whole story. She is the type of character often described as genki. Always full of energy, optimism, and goodwill. Raised far from the hustle and bustle, she possesses a childlike curiosity and wonder for the world. Her naive enthusiasm can be the source of comical misunderstandings, but it is simultaneously her greatest strength. This is because Yuzu has an extraordinary gift for seeing some good in everyone—even the most gruff or sorrowful guest. She doesn’t judge or criticize, but simply offers a sincere smile and a helping hand. Her straightforward kindness melts even the hardest of hearts. Whether it’s the irritated Satsuki or a lonely spirit seeking solace. As a novice, Yuzu learns practical skills from others, but it is she who teaches her colleagues empathy and openness. Despite her petite stature and lack of experience, she gradually becomes the glue that holds the entire group together.

Satsuki

Initially, she seems to be the complete opposite of Yuzu. A model employee. Disciplined, hardworking, and demanding. Primarily of herself, but she also doesn’t spare harsh words for her clumsier colleagues. Satsuki is a typical tsundere. Cold and strict on the outside, sensitive and craving acceptance on the inside. Her ambition to become a miko makes her feel inferior, and she is constantly trying to prove her worth. Because of this, she imposes high standards on herself (and those around her). When Yuzu arrives at Konohanatei, Satsuki treats her like a ball and chain. Someone has to fix her mistakes and make sure she doesn’t neglect her duties. Over time, however, this mentor-student relationship undergoes a transformation.

With her warmth and stubbornness in striving to be better, Yuzu makes Satsuki slowly soften. In moments of weakness, when Satsuki’s complexes and fears come to light, it is Yuzu who is by her side. For Satsuki, who was always afraid to show emotion, such a friend is a true treasure. As a result, over time, it’s no longer just Satsuki protecting Yuzu and teaching her the ropes; Yuzu also gives Satsuki the courage to believe in herself. Their bond becomes one of the most beautiful axes of the series. Satsuki stops taking everything so dead seriously and realizes that Konohanatei, while not the shrine she dreamed of, can also be a place where one fulfills their mission.

Ren and Natsume

The girls have known each other since childhood and share a relationship akin to a princess and her squire. Ren appears distinguished and self-centered—a typical ojou-sama who likes to feel beautiful and admired. Deep down, however, she mostly desires attention from her beloved friend Natsume. Whenever a third party shows interest in Natsume, Ren instantly falls into exaggerated jealousy, blushing with anger. Her theatrical reactions—from sulking to snarky remarks—give many scenes a comedic charm.

Natsume, on the other hand, is a straightforward, laid-back girl who prefers action over talk. Natsume might give the impression of being thick-skinned, but in reality, she is very sensitive when it comes to Ren.

Sakura

She is a true enigma. Sakura represents the kuudere type—quiet, hard to read, but absolutely adorable in her social awkwardness. Her interactions with others often consist of minor pranks or suddenly appearing right behind someone’s back. Despite this, the girls love her dearly like a younger sister. Sakura has taken a particular liking to Yuzu, sensing that her new colleague accepts her as she is and knows how to appreciate the charm of silent moments. In one episode, when Yuzu plays a calm melody on the koto for a stressed goddess, Sakura simply sits next to her and listens, snuggling into Yuzu—expressing her gratitude and affection without a word. Sakura speaks little, but when she does do something, she conveys so much more.

Supporting Characters

In the background, we also have the senior Konohanatei staff, who act as caretakers and mentors. Kiri, as the head of the attendants, is like an older sister to the young fox girls. She offers advice, protects them from Okami’s strictness, and at the same time can turn a blind eye to minor antics. You can feel that she used to be just like them, which is why she supports their professional growth with warmth and humor. Okami, on the other hand, is a character shrouded in mystery. On a daily basis, she strolls slowly with a pipe in her hand, observing everything through narrowed eyes, but in crucial moments she can solve a serious problem with a single word or gesture. She has something of a kind-hearted grandmother and a powerful goddess at the same time. Indeed, in the finale, we learn something extraordinary about Okami that sheds new light on her bond with Yuzu and the very essence of Konohanatei. But I’ll leave that for the viewers to discover.

Konohana Kitan (2017) – Ocena i podsumowanie

Konohana Kitan is a beautiful, soothing tale about finding your place in the world and building bonds that become just as important as family. The narrative pace is slow—this is not a flaw, but a hallmark of the iyashikei genre. Because of this, we can truly enjoy the sight of falling flower petals, listen to the splash of water in the bathhouse, and take a breather alongside the heroines after a hard day.

Konohana Kitan beautifully aligns with the tradition of iyashikei anime. The polished audiovisual design, the wealth of cultural tidbits, and above all, the gallery of wonderful heroines make you want to return to Konohanatei. For the warm emotions that this series leaves behind, it’s worth slowing down for a moment and immersing yourself in its world.

Final evaluation

Which translation do I recommend to watch Konohana Kitan (2017)?

  • Crunchyroll (official) – a pretty good translation that I can’t really fault, except for some truly minor details that are so cosmetic they shouldn’t hinder the reception of the whole show or the characters themselves in any way.
