The key visual element of the series is undoubtedly the character design, particularly that of the main protagonist, Kannawa Azusa. In the manga, the author placed a huge emphasis on the expression of her eyes. The anime adaptation successfully translates this onto the screen. I was pleased that the animators took care of the facial expression details, which are the narrative foundation of the series. When Azusa enters gap moe mode, the line art becomes noticeably softer, the colors warmer, and sharp contours give way to rounder shapes typical of the moe aesthetic. The backgrounds look very aesthetic and are pleasing to the eye.
Of course, let’s not fool ourselves—there are visible budget cuts in some scenes where character designs clearly drift off-model. We won’t experience dynamic animation sequences here, but they aren’t necessary either. The animators focused on what matters most in a romance: the emotions painted on the characters’ faces, and they pulled it off really well.
Audio
Bukiyou na Senpai can be treated, in a way, as a showcase of Lynn’s skills. Because the main character, Kannawa Azusa, operates on the border of two extreme personalities—a cold professional and a panicking introvert—the aforementioned seiyuu really had to rise to the occasion.
Maintaining the character and tone of voice while seamlessly switching between standard Japanese and the Kyushu dialect (Hakata-ben) when the protagonist loses her composure is quite a challenge. Lynn handled it brilliantly. Her interpretation of Kannawa is full of nuances. You can hear genuine embarrassment and warmth breaking through the iron mask.

As soon as I read the series description and saw the first PV while picking shows to watch this fall, I knew that Bukiyou na Senpai would land on my watchlist. However, it wasn’t until the first episode that I realized I would genuinely like this title and its characters. At that point, I had no illusions that the series would stay with me until the end of the season.

What is the series about
Bukiyou na Senpai is a romantic comedy set in the reality of corporate office workers. The characters’ problems, although often presented in a comedic tone, are actually very grounded—stress before a presentation, communication difficulties with coworkers, balancing work and private life, or the fear of being judged.
The series’ narrative relies on the gap moe trope—in this case, the contrast between a strict exterior and an adorable, clumsy interior. Kannawa is characterized by a heavy duality between her Public Mode and Private Mode. This acts as the driving engine for character development. With each subsequent episode, we see how Kannawa, thanks to Kamegawa’s support, learns to accept her awkward side.
The relationship of the main couple develops at a satisfying pace. Initially, we observe professional misunderstandings, where Kannawa tries to play the role of a capable senpai but suffers defeats on the social front. The breakthrough comes when they discover shared interests. The trip to Okinawa is one of the turning points. Forced proximity in a hotel room, resulting from a booking error, forces them to interact on a personal level. This allows both of them to see each other for who they truly are.
Some subplots, such as the relationships of other employees, were treated somewhat neglectfully to focus on the main couple. Of course, an attentive viewer will easily connect the dots; however, I believe it could have used perhaps one more episode for the backgrounds of the supporting characters to fully resonate.
Characters
Kannawa Azusa
In the eyes of her coworkers, Azusa appears as the embodiment of corporate idealism. She is the leader of the promotion department, an impeccably efficient employee who commands respect and often outright fear. In the world of office politics, Azusa is perceived as a cold, strict, and distant woman who deliberately isolates herself from social integration. This attitude, although interpreted as arrogance, is actually a sophisticated defense mechanism. The origin of this behavior dates back to childhood trauma, when, as class president, trying to protect her peers from danger, she adopted an overly controlling attitude, which resulted in rejection by the group. The adult Azusa continues this strategy. Being strict is synonymous with being responsible for her. In her logic, only rigorous adherence to the rules can protect her subordinates from mistakes and harm.
Kamegawa Yuu
Honest, hardworking, observant, and empathetic. His greatest asset is his extraordinary perceptiveness. While other office workers succumb to the superficial impression of the terrifying Azusa, Yuu almost immediately spots the dissonance between her words and intentions. He is immune to her abrasiveness, interpreting it as a form of clumsy care. His attitude is characterized by a deep respect for his superior, which over time evolves into admiration and then into romantic feelings. Although he is younger in age and seniority, he often takes on the role of an emotional caregiver. He is the one who initiates key changes in their relationship and shows a maturity that his senpai sometimes lacks.
Hotta Mio
Extroverted, full of energy, and possessing high social skills. She is the catalyst for events. She is the one who arranges various outings to push the main couple towards each other. She is not afraid of Kannawa, treating her like a cute older sister, which helps normalize Kannawa’s presence in the group.
Kankaiji Ritsu
She is the only one who fully understands the intentions behind Azusa’s behavior. She often provokes the couple to force them to be honest. Her relationship with Kannawa resembles that of an older and younger sister.
Mio and Ritsu form an alliance aimed at matchmaking the main couple. Hotta, thanks to her high social competence, mitigates Azusa’s awkwardness by treating her like an older sister. Kankaiji, on the other hand, having known Azusa the longest, acts as a guardian who ensures that Azusa doesn’t run away from her own happiness.
Supporting Characters
Kannawa Sakura (Azusa’s mother) is a volcano of energy speaking in a strong dialect, who helps Kamegawa understand the origin of her daughter’s behavior. In turn, Kamegawa Yuki (Yuu’s sister) serves to spark Azusa’s jealousy, as she mistakenly takes her for her protégé’s partner. It is precisely thanks to Yuki that the main protagonist realizes she feels something more toward Yuu than just professional responsibility.
Bukiyou na Senpai (2025) – Evaluation and Summary
I wrote at the very beginning that I was expecting a light comedy. What I got, however, somewhat exceeded my expectations in terms of the warmth and charm radiating from the screen.
Bukiyou na Senpai is a solid pick for fans of office romances, but also for slice-of-life fans who enjoy this kind of atmosphere. The season finale was executed in such a way that it could, for all intents and purposes, satisfyingly conclude the story, giving the viewer room to fill in the rest for themselves. The adaptation doesn’t fully exhaust the source material, though, so I would gladly welcome a continuation in the future.

- Crunchyroll (official) – a pretty good translation that I can’t really fault, except for some truly minor details that are cosmetic enough not to interfere in any way with the reception of the whole series or the characters themselves.
