Urushihara Satoshi – Cell Works (Movic, 1994) – My Comment

Urushihara Satoshi is a mangaka and illustrator known for his distinctive style and fondness for highlighting female breasts. His works were the basis for such anime as Plastic Little and Legend of Lemnear. He has also worked on character design for games such as Langrisser and Growlanser. I personally love his style, but these days it’s quite hard to find artbooks with his works. Especially collections of illustrations not dedicated to a specific game. I’ve been looking for this particular one for a long time. And finally managed to find it in almost perfect condition at a certain auction in Japan (it’s almost thirty years old).

Cell Works is divided into several chapters. You can find his works dedicated to anime series, games, but also original illustrations, unrelated to any other titles. At the end – as it usually happens – quite an extensive interview with the author himself. Urushihara’s character design probably needs no introduction. Attention to detail, unique style, excellent shading and strongly contrasting colors are still impressive. Cell Works was published in A4 format and contains 134 pages. Most of which are devoted to presenting the author’s work in full color on nearly full pages. In short, a must-have item for every fan. If anyone would like to see how his style looks in animation, I recommend one-episode OVA Plastic Little (review here).

Before proceeding to the gallery, where you’ll be able to see some photos of the artbook’s contents, it’s good to show how it looks from the outside.

Tokunou Shoutarou – Next Game!! (Houbunsha, 2021)

I've loved Tokunou Shoutarou's style ever since I read the first chapter of New Game! A few months ago, while browsing pixiv, I noticed that an artbook titled Next Game was being released on September 27! Without a second thought I placed a pre-order. The package was shipped on schedule (the day before the release), but I waited over a month and a half for it (it was only yesterday that the letter carrier showed up at my door handing it to me) - I can't remember the last time it took this long for a package shipped in Japan to arrive.

Momoco – Arietta (Genkosha, 2020)

The artbook titled arietta by Momoco features artwork depicting female characters from series, projects, and games such as Akugyaku Kishidan: Sono Elf, Kyoubou ni Tsuki, Bullet Girls Phantasia, Fate/Grand Order, Fate/Stay Night, Kanpani Girls, Last Embryo, Onsen Musume, Oshiego ni Kyouhakusareru no wa Hanzai desu ka?, Utawarerumono: Lost Flag and original illustrations.

Tomose Shunsaku – Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e – Art Book (Kadokawa, 2017)

The artbook features illustrations by Tomose Shunsaku, the artist responsible for the drawings for the light novel by Kinugasa Shogo titled Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e, telling the story of a group of students at an elite, private high school. The illustrations thematically include primarily characters from this novel, while further down the page are his original works and characters from other titles.

Nanao Naru – Rainbow-colored IceCream (2005)

Nanao Naru is an illustrator whose character designs have been used in many visual novels and their adaptations. These include Ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two (and both Shaft studio adaptations), Sola, Da Capo, Canvas 2: Niji-iro no Sketch, Shuffle! and Wind -A Breath of Heart-. This artbook contains quite a few original illustrations that have appeared in various magazines or doujin circle publications founded by the author, Ice to Choco, but also some of the titles mentioned above. Sources for each drawing are given on the final pages.
