Momoco – Arietta (Genkosha, 2020) My Comment

The artbook titled arietta by Momoco features artwork depicting female characters from series, projects, and games. Such as Akugyaku Kishidan: Sono Elf, Kyoubou ni Tsuki, Bullet Girls Phantasia, Fate/Grand Order, Fate/Stay Night, Kanpani Girls, Last Embryo, Onsen Musume, Oshiego ni Kyouhakusareru no wa Hanzai desu ka?, Utawarerumono: Lost Flag and original illustrations. It counts 176 pages in A4 size and was printed on high quality, thick paper. When you wade through all the illustrations, you’ll see Momoco give a fairly comprehensive explanation of the process of creating his drawings. At the very end you’ll find a table of contents with the sources/origins of the designs on each page.

Personally, I’ve been following Momoco on pixiv for quite some time now. I really like the level of detail (including shading) he shows in his artworks. Literally every page of this artbook contains beautiful drawings that are just incredibly enjoyable to look at.
Arietta as usual – is wrapped in a high quality color wrapper and additional obi. The cover price is ¥3000 and that’s exactly how much you can still buy this artbook for. For example, on Amazon in Japan, which offers quite cheap courier shipping. DHL to be precise, which delivers the package to reach our days usually in about 4 working days, at least in Europe).
I definitely recommend this artbook to any collector and fans of Momoco’s style.

Mateusz Urbanowicz – Tokyo Storefronts (MdN Corporation, 2018)

Tokyo Storefronts is a collection of illustrations by Mateusz Urbanowicz. He probably doesn't need any introduction (at least in my country, because he's from Poland), but I'll just write briefly that he went to Japan to study the art of drawing. The fruits of his work in the form of backgrounds can be seen in the movie Kimi no Na wa (and to have such a thing in your portfolio is really a feat for a gaijin).

Kantoku – Imouto sae Ireba Ii. Art Works (Shogakukan, 2020)

This time, the review focuses on an artbook featuring the characters from a light novel called Imouto sae Ireba Ii. The visual part was handled by Kantoku. Most people probably know this title from the anime adaptation. Unfortunately, to put it mildly, it did not even come close to completing the source material. Nor is there likely to be any hope for a second season anymore.

The Best Masterpieces of 100 Eshi ver.3 (BNN, 2017)

Eshi 100 nin – ver.3 is a collection of carefully selected illustrations by 100 artists (very well known and respected), twenty of whom have done their work exclusively for this publication. This is the third edition in the series, yet again in B5 format. The publisher boasts that Brilliant Pallet (ブリリアントパレット) technology was used for printing, allowing for almost complete reproduction of the original colors.

Tokunou Shoutarou – Next Game!! (Houbunsha, 2021)

I've loved Tokunou Shoutarou's style ever since I read the first chapter of New Game! A few months ago, while browsing pixiv, I noticed that an artbook titled Next Game was being released on September 27! Without a second thought I placed a pre-order. The package was shipped on schedule (the day before the release), but I waited over a month and a half for it (it was only yesterday that the letter carrier showed up at my door handing it to me) - I can't remember the last time it took this long for a package shipped in Japan to arrive.
