My Comment

Eshi 100 nin – ver. 3 (or The Best Masterpieces Of 100 Eshi ver.3 – as the English subtitle reads) is a collection of carefully selected illustrations by 100 artists (very well known and respected). Twenty of whom have done their work exclusively for this publication. This is the third edition in the series, yet again in B5 format. The publisher boasts that Brilliant Pallet (ブリリアントパレット) technology was used for printing, allowing for almost complete reproduction of the original colors. I don’t think this is just marketing gibberish, as the print quality of the illustrations is really impressive.

It should be noted that all texts are in two languages – original Japanese and English. All titles (games, anime, manga) of illustration sources are in their original form and romaji (not in western localized one). This is undoubtedly another great feature. The opening pages even include information about the equipment used by each creator (computer, scanner, monitor, operating system, software) whose work is used in this publication. In addition, there is also some personal information. Including gender, date of birth and blood type and a brief description (who they are, what they like and what they do). The artbook is 264 pages almost entirely filled with artworks, so there is plenty to look at.

It’s also worth mentioning that on each page you will also find links to the creators’ social media profiles (pixiv, twitter) and to their own website (if they have one).

Show off

Before I show the dozen or so photos of the artbook’s contents, a quick glance at the outside part folded into an obi (which lists the creators in alphabetical order).

And this is how the artbook looks like without the wrapper:

Rurudo – Unreal (Ichijinsha, 2021)

Unreal is divided into four chapters. The first chapter features quite a few original illustrations by rurudo. Including one that was used to create a figurine depicting his character Eve LOVECALL in the exact pose from that illustration (which was scheduled for release last November, but only went on general sale a month ago).

Urushihara Satoshi – Cell Works (Movic, 1994)

Urushihara Satoshi is a mangaka and illustrator known for his distinctive style and fondness for highlighting female breasts. His works were the basis for such anime as Plastic Little and Legend of Lemnear. He has also worked on character design for games such as Langrisser and Growlanser.

Kantoku – Sailor Fuku no Mannaka Anthology (Wani, 2019)

Another Kantoku artbook in my collection. This time it's an anthology under his leadership with the theme of Japanese sailor school uniforms, or rather girls wearing them. The publication includes works by various artists, not just those of the initiator.

Konbu Wakame – Soleil (Art Jeuness, 2023)

Konbu Wakame is the artist responsible for, among other things, the drawings in manga such as Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai!, Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii and Sekai de Ichiban Oppai ga Suki! Although there is a bit of character scrolling on many pages, it is the heroines of these titles that Soleil puts in the foreground. It is, of course, about Jahy in two forms, Lilith and Chiaki. A nice touch is that many of the works depict the aforementioned heroines posing together.
