Tomose Shunsaku – Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e – Art Book (Kadokawa, 2017) – My Comment

The artbook features illustrations by Tomose Shunsaku. Artist responsible for the drawings for the light novel by Kinugasa Shogo titled Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e. It’s telling the story of a group of students at an elite, private high school. The illustrations thematically include primarily characters from this novel. While further down the page are his original works and characters from other titles. The publication includes one fold-out page at the very beginning showing one of the main characters in a rather ambiguous position. Whole book is divided into seven chapters, of which the last one is (as usual) an interview with the author.

Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e – Art Book was published in A4 format, counting 148 pages. The whole book is wrapped in a high quality colorful wrapper with an additional obi. Tomose Shunsaku’s drawings are full of details in every place. They are distinctive due to high contrast and care about even the smallest details. The specific style of multi-level shading (which can usually be seen in high-budget visual novels such as Minori’s) gives the drawings depth and makes them really enjoyable to look at. If you’ve read Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Here it looks even better because of the larger format and much better print quality. Fans of Tomose Shunsaku’s style and/or novels will surely be delighted, just as I am. I definitely recommend it, the artbook is worth every yen of the cover price.
