Konomi – ArtWorks (Kadokawa, 2022) – My Comment

Konomi’s most popular illustrations are the covers of the Liar Liar light novel. In the reviewed artbook there was no absence of material depicting the heroines of this title. In addition, we can see also here the original works of the creator, as well as the heroines of another light novel – Cross Connect (interesting fact – with a similar theme as Liar Liar). Many publications from the Touhou universe have also come out from under Konomi’s brush. Some works were also included in the described publication.

The artbook has 128 pages in A4 format. The whole is divided into five chapters. Presented consecutively – works from light novels, unspecified publications, doujins, Touhou and bishoujo games. The last part is a special section with a corssover of Liar Liar and Cross Connect in the form of a short light novel chapter. Of course – in Japanese. At the very end a very short interview with the author. In each chapter, the illustrations include captions where exactly they came from (in Japanese only).

The overall print quality is absolutely stunning. The colors are vibrant and the amount of detail is literally amazing. Not all illustrations take up an entire A4 page. Occasional black and white works can also be found, although those in full color definitely prevail.

Konomi – ArtWorks is the perfect entry in the collection for enthusiasts of cute illustrations with lots of details. Personally, I’m not a big fan of Liar Liar or Cross Connect, but the design style of Konomi’s characters just really appeals to me and simply couldn’t miss this artbook in my collection.

Tokunou Shoutarou – Next Game!! (Houbunsha, 2021)

I've loved Tokunou Shoutarou's style ever since I read the first chapter of New Game! A few months ago, while browsing pixiv, I noticed that an artbook titled Next Game was being released on September 27! Without a second thought I placed a pre-order. The package was shipped on schedule (the day before the release), but I waited over a month and a half for it (it was only yesterday that the letter carrier showed up at my door handing it to me) - I can't remember the last time it took this long for a package shipped in Japan to arrive.

Ogipote – Aikyo Artbook (Kadokawa, 2021)

The artbook has 144 pages in B5 format. The content is divided into 11 thematic chapters. At the very beginning, the author greets us with an explanation of the meaning of the publication's title. Aikyo refers to a charming, enchanting nature or a nostalgic feeling. Enjoy the warm atmosphere of the artworks with unique, beautiful touches.

Konbu Wakame – Soleil (Art Jeuness, 2023)

Konbu Wakame is the artist responsible for, among other things, the drawings in manga such as Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai!, Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii and Sekai de Ichiban Oppai ga Suki! Although there is a bit of character scrolling on many pages, it is the heroines of these titles that Soleil puts in the foreground. It is, of course, about Jahy in two forms, Lilith and Chiaki. A nice touch is that many of the works depict the aforementioned heroines posing together.

Mateusz Urbanowicz – Tokyo Storefronts (MdN Corporation, 2018)

Tokyo Storefronts is a collection of illustrations by Mateusz Urbanowicz. He probably doesn't need any introduction (at least in my country, because he's from Poland), but I'll just write briefly that he went to Japan to study the art of drawing. The fruits of his work in the form of backgrounds can be seen in the movie Kimi no Na wa (and to have such a thing in your portfolio is really a feat for a gaijin).
