My Comment

Another part of the excellent artbook series. A collection of carefully selected title illustrations by one hundred (very well-known and respected) artists. The fourth edition in the series, is again published in B5 format. However, unlike the third volume, all texts are exclusively in Japanese. I don’t know why it was decided to publish it this way. There is nothing I can do about it, unfortunately. On each page dedicated to a particular illustrator, various information is given, including a link to the website, profile ID on pixiv, email address, YouTube channel name, equipment the illustrator works with, Twitter ID (and other profiles on websites – if they have any), a brief description, and the prevailing type of drawings.

At the bottom of the page there is also information on where the drawings came from. Such as names of series, manga, games or other projects. New Masterpieces of 100 Eshi ver.4 totals 223 pages, so there is plenty to look at. Especially since the whole thing looks gorgeous . Not only is it beautifully saturated with colors. The printing itself was done on very good quality paper, which only enhances the ‘wow’ factor. I definitely recommend this publication. You can discover a lot of new artists, who upload to pixiv a myriad of brilliant works. This is one of those artbooks (and its previous editions) that you simply must have in your collection if you are a fan of modern Japanese art.

New Masterpieces of 100 Eshi ver.4 (BNN, 2022), Artbook – Show off

Before I show the dozen or so photos of the artbook’s contents, a quick glance at the exterior page rolled up in obi (which lists the creators in alphabetical order).

And this is how the artbook looks without the wrapper:

Murata Range – Futurelog

I assume that not many people interested in Japanese art don't recognize the author, or at least his unique style. This beautiful artbook is covered with wrapper and protective clear film - English-language versions of Japanese artbooks or manga usually don't have these, so good job, Denpa Books.

Nanao Naru – Rainbow-colored IceCream (2005)

Nanao Naru is an illustrator whose character designs have been used in many visual novels and their adaptations. These include Ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two (and both Shaft studio adaptations), Sola, Da Capo, Canvas 2: Niji-iro no Sketch, Shuffle! and Wind -A Breath of Heart-. This artbook contains quite a few original illustrations that have appeared in various magazines or doujin circle publications founded by the author, Ice to Choco, but also some of the titles mentioned above. Sources for each drawing are given on the final pages.

Fuzichoco – Sai Gen Kyo (Genkosha, 2020)

The publication contains 192 pages. It consists almost exclusively of illustrations printed on very good quality chalkboard paper. It features fold-out pages with, among others, characters from Fate/Grand Order, Touhou Project or Vocaloids, Onmyoji and Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou!

Kantoku – Imouto sae Ireba Ii. Art Works (Shogakukan, 2020)

This time, the review focuses on an artbook featuring the characters from a light novel called Imouto sae Ireba Ii. The visual part was handled by Kantoku. Most people probably know this title from the anime adaptation. Unfortunately, to put it mildly, it did not even come close to completing the source material. Nor is there likely to be any hope for a second season anymore.
